Travel to Abuja, Nigeria

Last month I had the opportunity to visit Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. It was a trip filled with cultural discoveries, beautiful landscapes and – most memorable – a visit to one of the city’s (according to my recommendation) best beauty salons. The idea and hope was that I would be able to learn more about the difference between light and dark skin when it comes to treatments.

Here is an insight into my journey and my experience at the beauty salon which was truly an interesting experience.

First Impression of Abuja

Abuja is a city that, contrary to what you might think, has wide boulevards, modern architecture and lush parks. After checking into my hotel, I decided to explore the city. The first day was spent visiting the Nike Art gallery, which is also in Lagos, which I visited last year. The gallery contains only African art and is very impressive with fantastic colors and motifs.

They also make and print fabrics with different patterns on site and I was shown how they produce the blue dye indigo. It is like a bush/small tree with large seeds on it that they grind manually and add liquid to then dye the fabrics. The patterns tell different stories and events.

Mellon SPA

In the midst of this adventure, I wanted to treat myself to something special and decided to visit a local beauty salon. After receiving recommendations from the hotel staff, I booked an appointment at Mellon SPA, known for its luxurious treatments and professional staff. Facebook Mellon

It was a bit difficult to find, the entrance was quite anonymous, but when I stepped into the salon I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The interior was modern yet cozy, with subdued lighting and soothing music playing in the background. The spa turned out to be Muslim and no men were allowed inside.

The treatment

I chose a classic facial with a focus on moisture, where the therapist used natural products that were mixed just before the treatment. Cleansing, exfoliation and a moisturizing mask were carefully applied. After the treatment, my skin felt incredibly soft and radiant, although the therapist didn't tell me much about what was included in the products/treatment.

In terms of experience, the treatment was otherwise similar to those we perform at the salon, apart from the heat, it was about as hot in the treatment room as outside - about 38 degrees...

Went the next day to what I thought was a salon, but turned out to be just a store where I bought some domestic products. I have to say that the standard of the products is very high and there is a wide variety to choose from.

I also visited Jabi Lake, a nice and green area, and also the nearby shopping center for some retail therapy. Millennium Park was also a favorite, where I could take a leisurely walk and enjoy the beautiful nature.

Summary

My trip to Abuja was an unforgettable experience, it may not be the first place you think of traveling to but it is a travel destination you will remember.
